Before your first time
Your first evening at the salon is easier than you think. A few friendly notes take away the uncertainty — the music does the rest.
Etiquette
Traditionally, an invitation to dance is made with the eyes: a glance across the room (mirada) and a subtle nod (cabeceo) are enough. This keeps every invitation discreet, and a no stays unspoken and free of embarrassment. Thank your partner after the tanda and find your way calmly back to the edge of the dance floor.
Dress
Wear whatever you feel comfortable and move well in — elegant or casual, just as you like. Breathable fabrics are pleasant, and a small scarf or change of shirt is a good idea for warm evenings.
Shoes
What matters is a smooth sole that lets you pivot on the parquet — leather soles or proper tango shoes are ideal. To begin with, comfortable shoes without a coarse tread are enough. If tango stays with you, a pair with good support through the midfoot is worth it later on.
